Calcium helps build strong bones but did you know that it also helps build strong teeth?
Not having enough calcium in your diet can cause weakness or in your bones and teeth. A calcium deficiency can lead to osteoporosis which can weaken your jawbone leading to tooth loss. Aside from osteoporosis, a calcium deficiency can cause tooth decay which also may cause tooth loss.
Ensuring you are getting enough calcium on a daily basis and practicing good oral health care are steps you can take to maintain healthy teeth and bones. Specifically, you can:
- Brush and floss your teeth
- Regularly visit your dentist for cleanings and checkups
- Eat or consume 1,000-2,000 milligrams of calcium daily
You can obtain calcium through food or supplements. Recent research highly suggests it is better to obtain calcium through your diet than a supplement. Many foods contain calcium, including:
- Milk
- Yogurt
- Dark green leafy vegetables
- Cheese
- Almonds
